Stihl Chainsaw Sharpener

In this article I review the Stihl 2 in 1 chainsaw sharpener

What Chainsaw Sharpener to use?

The previous article that I wrote was about how to sharpen a chainsaw. In that article I mainly focused on how to sharpen a chainsaw and only briefly talked about different types of chainsaw sharpeners, in this article, and hopefully in a few more future articles I will be looking at specific types of chainsaw sharpeners, and will be writing a review for each type of sharpener that I think is of good quality, I will not write about any sharpener that I do not like, or feel are of lesser quality. I know that most people who do not have any experience or much experience at sharpening a chainsaw, but want to learn how to sharpen a chainsaw, are probably wondering, what’s the best chainsaw sharpener out there? While I have no intentions of declaring any one particular sharpener to be the best, I will give my honest opinion on each one that I review, and try to find the pros and cons of each, so those who are not sure what sharpener is best for them can make their own informed decision about what sharpener might be best for their situation. Today I will be writing about a Stihl chainsaw sharpener, or more specifically the Stihl 2 in 1 file holder chainsaw sharpener.

The Stihl Chainsaw Sharpener 2 In 1 File Holder

The Stihl Chainsaw sharpener 2 in 1 File Holder, is a relatively new product that I had not seen up until a few months ago, and have not used prior to this review. Stihl products are made in Germany, and are used worldwide, they are one of the most recognized names in the power tool industry, and are most well-known for their chainsaws, but they make all kinds of other power tools, such as weed trimmers, leaf blowers, demolition saws, etc., and plenty of accessories to go with them. The 2 in 1 file holder sharpener comes in a simple clear plastic package with a set of instructions that are simply 14 separate illustrations showing how to use the product, the illustrations are clear and easy to understand, there is no text anywhere in the instructions, just illustrations. There is a short description of the product on the instruction page that reads as follows, “2-in-1 File Holder – Resharpens cutter and Lowers depth gauge in a single operation”. The description of the Stihl Chainsaw sharpener 2 in 1 file holder is written in 28 separate languages, and is a testament to how popular Stihl products are worldwide. The File Holder consists of two heavy gauge plastic ends connected by four metal guide rods and a space in the center for three files one flat file and two round files, the files are removable allowing them to be replaced as they wear out. Overall, the construction of the tool is solid, and feels like a well-made tool that will last.

The Correct Size Stihl Chainsaw Sharpener

The Stihl Chainsaw Sharpener 2 in 1 File Holder comes in several sizes, so you must determine the right size sharpener for your saw. If you do not know the size of the chain on your saw, you can sometimes find this information right on the bar of the saw, on Stihl Chainsaws this information is usually right on the bar. When this information is not on the bar, you can check with the manufacturer, or you could ask a service center what size chain you have on your saw, most of these service centers will know this info without having to look it up, and are usually happy to give you the information, or you can get a chain measuring tool, which are readily available, and inexpensive.

Using The Stihl Chainsaw Sharpener 2 in 1 File Holder

As I previously stated I have not used one of these sharpeners prior to this review, so this was a learning experience for me. I own about eleven different chainsaws of just about every size with several size chains, so I had a wide selection of sizes to choose from, I decided to try it on a Stilh model 026 pro series with a 3/8″ chain or 5.2 mm. The chain was not to old and the cutters had been sharpened once very lightly, I had not cut down the rackers as I do not cut the rackers every time I sharpen the saw if I am only lightly touching up the cutters. The chain was just getting to the point of needing to be sharpened, and I felt was a good representation of an average saw needing sharpening. Illustrations are right on the sharpener, showing the proper way to use it on the saw, one side of the sharpener is used on one side of the chain and the other side of the sharpener is used on the other side of the chain. The sharpener is moved across the chain in one direction, not back and forth, and there is an arrow on both sides of the sharpener showing which direction to move it across the chain. Starting at the master link I held the sharpener in one hand lining up the guide bars on the teeth of the chain at about a 30 degree angle, and a 90 degree angle to the vertical side of the bar, I moved the sharpener across the cutter tooth and the racker three to four times for every tooth on both sides of the chain, until the entire chain was sharp.

The 2 in 1 Stihl Chainsaw Sharpener A Good Sharpener

After using the Stihl Chainsaw Sharpener I was impressed, the chain was very sharp when I was done, the cutters were razor sharp, about as sharp as you could possibly expect, and the rackers were also cut nicely. This tool was very easy to use, and exceeded my expectations. I would recommend this tool to anyone regardless of their experience with sharpening chainsaws, and I would say this would be a great sharpener for someone with no experience sharpening chainsaws. The only situation I could think of that this sharpener might not be the right sharpener is if you have been sharpening the cutters multiple times and have not cut the rackers, then you may want to get a depth gauge and flat file, and cut the racker to the proper height first, before using this sharpener as I am not sure it will cut the racker to the proper height if you have only been sharpening the cutters without cutting the rackers.

Should you have any comments or questions please feel free to post them below

Once I had been using a chainsaw for different purposes but I have not seen unique tools for sharpening as you presented.

Maybe these sharperpners have reached the Philippines so we can have a more accurate sharpening ways and tools.

I believe accuracy of chainsaw teeth can help us work more efficiently .

Jimmy, thank you for reading my article. I had never used this sharpener before this review, and I was really impressed when I did, you will work much more efficiently if you keep the chain sharp, you must cut both teeth, the cutter and raker, on a chain to keep the chain cutting efficiently, and this sharpener dose that in one pass.
      Thank you
      Bob

Hi Bob, Yes having the best sharpener for your chainsaw is so important and thank you for sharing this great information here in this article
I have always used a different file to sharpen my saw but being left-handed I always seem to stuff it up so having one of these superb tools will be ideal for me
    Thank you

    • admin

Hi Vicki thanks for reading my review, I never thought about being left handed, I don’t know if this would be easier for you to use or not, but it seemed like it would be easy for just about anyone to use.
      Thanks

Interesting. I honestly had no idea I could actually sharpen my chainsaw myself. I used to just take it in to the local place I purchased it from when it started to dull and have them do it for me.

This looks like both a huge time and money saver given how far away the shop I bought it was is from my house. Thanks for the great article! Quick question, how long would you say the sharpener will last? Basically, how many sharpening sessions can I use it for before I might need a new one.

    • admin

Craig, thank you for reading my post, I would say you should be able to sharpen your chain at least ten to twenty times, but when you start to wear out the files you can just replace the files, they are not very expensive, I buy them by the box, the sharpener you buy just once, and you replace the files as needed.
      Thanks
      Bob

Have been using a chainsaw a few years now in my country house and this is definitely a tool I could use when in need. I may consider buying one as I had never sharpened my chainsaw in the past. Thanks for bringing it to my attention. Great review.

Hi Stratos, thanks for reading my review, yes this sharpener is real easy to use, and if you just spend about ten minutes now and then sharpening the saw before it gets to dull, you will see, you will be able to work much more efficiently.
      Best regards
