Simple woodworking projects-keeping it organised keeps it simple

This article discusses the importance of keeping your woodworking projects organized and simple, both for the beginner and advanced woodworker, and sets forth a course to follow.

Why keep woodworking projects simple?

There are many reasons to keep your projects simple and organized, here are a few examples.

  1. To control costs, an organized project reduces the number of mistakes you make, mistakes cost money, and an organized project cuts down on the number of surprises. You do not want surprises in your project, more often than not it will cost you money.
  2. To make efficient use of your time, time equals money.
  3. To finish the project. Many times people start a project and never finish it. Quite often these individuals did not bother to put together a good plan. Without a good plan it is very hard for them to understand what they are doing, and leads them to misjudge how much it will cost, and how long it will take to finish their project.

As a home improvement contractor, I learned a long time ago just how important it is to keep your projects as simple, and organized as possible. Keeping your project simple is critical to keeping your project on time, and on budget.

Simple woodworking plans- a good place to start.

simple plans

First you need to know what you want to build, then you need a plan on how to build it. There are two ways you can get a plan, or plans for what you want to build.

  1. You can create your own plans.
  2. You can use someone else’s plans.

Let’s say you want to make a custom-built bookcase in your home, you will most likely have to create your own plans or have someone create plans for you. You will need to know all the dimensions and measurements of what you want to build, and all the materials involved. If you are creating your own plans take your time and get it right, don’t rush this part of the project, this one of the most important steps of the project. Quite often it takes longer to design a project, than to build it.

Now lets say you want to build a custom desk, in that case there is a good chance you will be able to find a preexisting set of plans out of a book, on line, or someplace else.

It does not matter if you are a beginner looking to do small woodworking projects, a novice looking to do intermediate woodworking projects, or a highly skilled craftsmen looking to do advanced woodworking projects, a good set of plans is where you want to start. The plans are how you are going to organize your project to keep it simple.

What is a good set of plans? A good set of plans are plans you can start to understand right away, and are complete with everything you need to know. Are the plans explained with good language? Are there good illustrations that you can recognize? Good illustrations are critical to understanding the design. Do the illustration include dimensions clearly showing all the details? Nowadays we have the internet and finding a good set of plans should not be a problem. There are companies that sell electronically illustrated plans of all types that can show a project from different angles and are really good, and well worth the money.

You will know right away how good the plans are by how fast you understand them. Take the time to get good plans, this will save you a lot of time, money, and aggravation later on.

DIY woodworking projects you can do

When you are looking for woodworking projects, you want to look for projects you can confidently do and complete. If you are new to woodworking it would not make sense to start with an advanced project, you may want to do a Google search for beginner woodworking projects. If you are a more experienced woodworker and you want to build a harvest table that has turned legs, and you do not have access to a wood lathe, you will have to either pay someone to turn the legs for you, buy a lathe, or find another project.

You also want to look at cost and availability of the materials required. You should price everything you need before you start your project. The cost of some types of wood, especially hard woods like Oak, Maple, Cherry, Walnut, etc. can be very expensive. I own a small saw mill and occasionally mill my own wood for some of my projects, but even with heavy equipment to handle the logs, it can be very labor intensive, so don’t run out and buy a sawmill to mill your own wood unless you need a lot of it

Good woodworking plans- the key to good woodworking projects

The plans are the single most important part of any project. A good set of plans can make what appears to be a complicated and difficult project seem simple and easy, and a bad set or lack of plans can make a simple woodworking project, difficult, aggravating, and disappointing. The plans are the means by which you will organize and keep your projects simple, allowing you to quickly complete in a cost effective manner great woodworking projects.

Hey great post. My husband has just started doing a bit of woodwork now that he has more time, so I found this very interesting – especially the importance of getting good plans via google. Can you recommend some easy projects for a beginner? I’d like to try my hand at something as well. Cheers, Karen

Karen first I would try to think of something you might want that is simple in design like maybe a spice rack for the kitchen, or some simple shelving, a small stepping stool, etc., you will apreciate it more when it is done if it is something you can use or that fills a need. Once you think of something you may want then you can do some internet searches for some plans. Anything you build you will want to make sure you have the tools to build it before you start.
      Thanks for the comments
